A sweet little quartz mantel clock in for a new movement. Movement fitted. The difficult part was separating the dial from the mounting chassis. Glue had been used in production and being a aluminium dial force was not a option. Monday morning job I was not expecting. The Monday wind of all the clocks on test resulted in this French striker giving the impression the spring went on the strike side. The issue turned out to be the strike second wheel riveting gave way under stress. Just as well it went under test. This German pendulum striker came in for a clean and overhaul. The movement was one of the stickiest and dirtiest I have seen in a longtime, even the plates felt like they had adhesive all over them, sticky grease I think. On investigation a new barrel was needed due to three poor teeth section repairs previously done by another clock repairer. Movement serviced, two bushes, two movement bracket bolts found as those were missing, mounting screw sourced to mount the bell and a replacement barrel. If ever a clock showed its history and environment it lived in this one definitely did. It must have resided in a damp environment, perhaps a station. The movement cleaned and overhauled, new pallet faces and hands blued. This French balloon clock is in for a clean and overhaul. A new pendulum and gong is needed as those were missing. The pendulum was sorted easily. Due to the height of the case I found a old stock large gong rod and gong. The gong is to large for the case so utilised a smaller gong. I had to shorten the mounting rod so came up with the idea to refix the thread using a slot method. It may have been quicker to turn down the rod and re-thread but sometimes it is nice to experiment. Pleased with the sonic result.
